A couple of you requested fall writing prompts…
and now that it’s autumn and I’m back to regular blogging, I’m happy to oblige!
These fall writing prompts
are for a few different genres, including young adult, cozy fantasy, and romance. These are appropriate for teachers to use in classrooms, too. Some of them are specific to autumn, and some of them just have fall vibes.
1
She didn’t sell anything at her booth at the craft fair…
until this happened.
2
They return to their school or show up to a new one
with a whole new style and attitude.

The crows often bring gifts to their favorite human,
but this one was very unexpected.

The couple’s first date
is at an apple orchard or a pumpkin patch.

It’s Friday night in a small town,
and some people gather at the edge of the local lake or river and build a bonfire.

The falling leaves of this tree
make great parachutes.

The toadstools in this valley
glow in the moonlight.

Two marching band members
have an off-and-on conversation as they perform a halftime show on a football field.

Someone cuddles up
with an animal who had been lost or neglected.

The cedar chest is full of vintage sweaters
and tweed clothing, all in perfect condition.

The thief who steals rare books
always leaves a sonnet behind.

They all have to improvise
Halloween costumes at the very last minute.

Someone shows up in a costume
that nobody would’ve expected them to wear.

Unfortunately, they both have the same favorite chair at the library…
and they’re both at the library a lot.

The friends always meet at a coffee shop
to play board games, do puzzles, or do Tarot card readings.

Someone pretended to be able to read the future in tea leaves,
but now their predictions are coming true.

Someone tries to bake something
using their great-great-grandparent’s somewhat confusing recipe.

A caramel apple
gets stuck in somebody’s hair.

Someone goes very overboard
with the fall decorations.

They dig through piles of leaves
searching for this one lost object.

They get completely lost
in a corn maze.

None of these people know one another well,
but they’re spending Thanksgiving together.

One of them loves pumpkin spice lattes…
and the other one thinks they’re cliched and ridiculous.

Someone brings a neighbor homemade chili or a homemade pie…
and the friendly gesture doesn’t go as planned.

In the autumn of their lives,
they fall passionately, wildly in love.
