This list of character defects
is something I developed for writers, although of course, it could have lots of different uses! After I posted the List of 125 Talents and Skills, I’ve had several requests for a list of character flaws.
Not all of these “character flaws” are moral failings! Some of them are just challenges that could hold characters back.
And while some of them are big character flaws, others are minor!
Obviously, any list of character defects is going to be subjective. Almost any character trait can be negative when taken to an extreme. Many flaws can also be assets, or at least endearing, depending on the situation! It’s important to remember, too, that people have an amazing capacity to overcome even serious character defects.
A word about the AA defects of character list…
You may have been looking for the list of character defects from Alcoholics Anonymous. I’ve put those first for your convenience, and they’re marked with an asterisk.
This list of character flaws is in no particular order. You might want to bookmark it or pin it to Pinterest for future reference!
01
Resentment*
02
Cowardice*
The original AA pamphlet listed this as “Fear, Cowardice,” but as we know, those are two different things. Cowardice is allowing fear to prevent you from taking the best action.
03
Self-Pity*
04
Self-Justification*
We’ve all done this at one time or another, but it’s a problem when someone won’t take accountability for any of their mistakes.
05
Self-Importance, or Egotism*
We could also say “arrogance” here.
06
Self-Condemnation, or Guilt*
07
Lying and Evasiveness*
08
Impatience*
This is certainly one I struggle with!
09
Hate*
This has to be one of the worst ones on any list of character defects.
10
False Pride*
Being phony or in denial. I think being hypocritical ties into this.
11
Jealousy*
12
Envy*
Brené Brown wrote in her book Atlas of the Heart that jealousy refers to a relationship or position being threatened, while envy is wanting what someone else has. When you think about it, those are two very different things!
13
Laziness*
I’ve noticed that a lot of people say this is their biggest flaw. It can be a symptom of depression or anxiety, though.
14
Procrastination*
15
Insincerity*
16
Negative Thinking*
I think this is such a common one in the modern world because social media and the internet push so much negative content on us. But being a glass-half-empty person…or even worse, a “I bet the water is poisoned” person…is a character flaw that can hold people back.
17
Immoral Thinking*
18
Perfectionism*
…and intolerance of anything less.
19
Criticizing*
I think that when criticizing becomes constant or chronic, it becomes a character defect.
20
Greed*
21
Distrustfulness
This is an especially great character flaw for a hero or heroine in a romance novel.
22
Hypochondria
23
Being Thin-Skinned
24
Moodiness
25
Being a Buzzkill
This could be a subset of moodiness, but some moody people keep it to themselves.
26
Willful Ignorance
27
Callousness
28
Cruelty
If someone is callous, they’re indifferent to suffering, but if they’re cruel, they go out of their way to cause it and they enjoy it.
29
Violence
30
Rigidity
Being unable to change course or do something differently, even when the circumstances call for it, is a character defect.
31
Diffidence
In other words, shyness or timidity, or lacking the ability to speak up.
32
Lechery
33
Self-Indulgence
34
Being a Know-It-All
35
Naivetë
36
Immaturity
Immature or childish traits could include throwing tantrums over small matters, refusing responsibilities, or indulging in a juvenile sense of humor.
37
Fastidiousness
Being overly picky and persnickety can be a negative character trait.
38
Prejudice
This could be one prejudice in particular, or a whole slew of them.
39
Rudeness
40
Crassness
41
Bluntness
Characters with no tact can be disastrous. Of course, they can also be hilarious.
42
Dullness
Being boring and predictable has its positive aspects, but depending on the situation, it can also be a character defect.
43
Capriciousness
Being unpredictable has its positive aspects, but taken to an extreme, it can be a character flaw, too!
44
Selfishness
45
Indecision
46
Extravagance
47
Stinginess
48
Bossiness
49
Dependence
I could also say “neediness” here.
50
Obsession With Status
This is the character flaw of a person who always has to wear designer brands, chooses friends based on their social or economic status, and feels like a luxury car parked in their driveway makes them better than everyone else.
51
Boastfulness
52
Aimlessness
This may or may not go along with “laziness.” It’s the character trait of a person who doesn’t have any particular direction or plan…and isn’t even trying to get one.
53
Being Passive-Aggressive
54
Being Toxic-Nostalgic
I admit that I made this term up. I’m thinking here of the kind of person who believes that everything used to be better, and their happy days will never come again. They can’t remember that there were hard times in the past, too.
55
Avoiding Conflict
Not just choosing one’s battles, but running away from all of them.
56
Becoming Infatuated Too Easily
57
Sanctimoniousness
58
Fanaticism
59
Cynicism
60
Detachment
61
Negligence
62
Disloyalty
63
Over-Idealism
It’s great to be idealistic, but one can take it to an extreme, embarking on ill-advised projects and calling out anyone who doesn’t adhere completely to your ideals.
64
Cockiness
65
Pugnaciousness
This character defect describes someone who’s always looking for a brawl.
66
Sloppiness
This could be a subset of “laziness,” but then again, some very hard-working people are sloppy.
67
Excessive Sarcasm
Sarcasm is fine in moderation, but when it becomes a character’s only mode of expression, and when the character uses it in inappropriate situations, it becomes a flaw.
68
Excessive Anxiety
This can include a tendency to worry about things that don’t matter much, and/or to worry about things over which one has no control.
69
Pettiness
This refers to the kind of person who will get upset over the slightest of slights and hold a grudge for the slimmest of reasons.
70
Nosiness
Personally, I am super nosy, but as a writer I think sometimes I get a pass.
71
Tendency to Gossip
72
Tendency to Overthink
When this is your character flaw, “analysis paralysis” is real.
73
Tendency to Overshare
74
Awkwardness
This character flaw relates to poor social skills, such as struggling to carry on a normal conversation. I think a lot of people perceive themselves as more awkward than they really are, though.
75
Disorganization
76
Tardiness
77
Obliviousness
78
Restlessness
79
Inferiority Complex
80
Superiority Complex
81
Tendency to Talk Too Much
82
Tendency to Yell
83
Lack of Listening Skills
84
Lack of Empathy
85
Tendency to Hide One’s Feelings
86
Refusal to Ask for Help
Being able to ask for help when one needs it is one of the most basic survival skills there is.
87
Giving Up Too Easily
88
Paranoia
89
Vanity
Although I’m not a particularly vain person, I don’t think it’s that serious of a flaw, to be honest. 🙂
90
Forgetfulness
91
Whininess
92
Inconsistency
93
Uptightness
94
Inability to Say No
95
Being a Buzzkill
96
Obsessiveness
97
Addiction
98
Rebelliousness
If a person has to argue or has to defy authority every time, even when they don’t have a good reason to do it, they can cause a lot of problems for themselves.
99
Conformity
This can come from cowardice, a lack of creativity, or both.
100
Lack of Self-Awareness
If you’re new here, I should tell you that I love making lists for writers.
And you might want to check out my essential reference book, Master Lists for Writers! More than once, I’ve had the experience of meeting a bestselling author I really look up to, only to find out that they keep a copy of it on their desk. 😊
Is there something you’d add to this list of character defects?
After I made it I thought, Hmm, I think I might have MOST of these, hahaha, but that was probably just me!
Let us know your thoughts in the comments! Thanks so much for reading, and happy writing!
Wow, thank you for this awesome list! You hit me at exactly the right time as I’m creating my characters for my new WIP. Excellent food for thought.
I’m so glad it’s helpful, Naomi! Hope you’re having a good week!
That you for not using physical differences as defects. I had a disagreement with someone because they were calling scars character defects. I was told I was too progressive.
Whaaat? Of course physical differences aren’t character defects. That has nothing to do with being “progressive”–that’s just common sense! 😀 Sheesh.
Thank you for this list. It’s interesting to go through it – be honest with yourself and observe how much of each character flaw one sees in themselves.
Honestly, I felt like I had a little of most of them! 😀
Thank you for this awesome list.
Really, really helpful. Am passing this along!
One of the best list ever. Thank You. You inspired me to create another that kind of lists
This list is great! However, I noticed that “Being a Buzzkill” is on there twice. Just thought you should know.
