First off, “Cancer” is the worst name in astrology. Can we re-name it, please? Anyway, the Crab is a great personality type that can help you build a devoted, emotional character!

Some people think of Cancer as “wimpy,” which is totally incorrect. Being emotionally open and honest is its own kind of courage, and as a couple of the pop culture examples may remind you, a Cancer character can be a serious badass when it comes to protecting others.
I’ve mentioned this before, but the classic traits of your zodiac sign may not fit you at all. This is only for character development!
Here are some positive traits of a Cancer:
Emotional
Nurturing
Faithful
Careful
Homebody
Protective
And here are some not-so-positive traits:
Moody
Clingy
Insecure
Pessimistic
Brooding
Fearful
As a friend…
The Crab is a sentimental soul. She’s likely to fill her Instagram account full of photos of you. When you’re in need, she’s is a friend indeed, bringing you soup when you’re sick and sending you funny cards when you’re down. You’ve got to treat her carefully, though. She might take a well-meaning joke to heart, and if you slight her, she will pretty much never forget it.
As a lover…
You want someone to settle down and have a couple of kids with? Good news — the Crab is all about that! He’ll be a faithful partner who always understands how you’re feeling. He’ll love lighting a bunch of candles and cuddling with you on the couch. He might even make you cookies. On the down side, he might be emotionally manipulative, or just awfully needy.
As a parent…
The Crab is a sweet parent who dotes on her kids, and she protects them fiercely. Her nurturing and protective instincts may extend to children other than her own. She may be guilty of laying guilt trips on them, and she may have trouble letting them go.
As a villain…
A Cancer villain may be motivated by revenge for what he perceives as a personal betrayal. Another possibility is that the death of a loved one made him lose his mind.
Here are some pop culture examples of nurturing, faithful Cancer types.
I’m not paying attention here to when the characters were supposedly born, but just using their personalities as examples. I’m sorry if I’m not familiar with your favorite TV shows, books, or movies, so please feel free to share more ideas of examples.
Noah Calhoun from The Notebook.
Molly Weasley from the Harry Potter series.
Snow White, the Disney version.
Hawkeye (Clint Barton), Avengers: Age of Ultron
Jim Halpert from The Office.

This is a very clever way to create a character’s personality file.
I’m a Cancer – and I agree it is the worst name in astrology. 🙂 great article.
Ah thanks! I am definitely going to use this method in my next book, so I figured, why not share? 🙂
Are you going to do all the signs? 🙂 I hope!
I use Vogular’s 12 point plan & characters, but want to try his plan + zodiac characters for the next one.
This is such a great series!
The hero in my current work in progress is a double cancer (meaning he has cancer sun AND cancer moon,) and boy is that a doozy. For him. And the heroine.
Two other things I’ve noticed about cancers: they can really shut down emotionally – they scuttle away at any threat of emotional danger. And like a crab they walk sideways, so they often don’t come right out and say things, they take a side route.
Thanks for writing these. 🙂
Ooh, you know more about this than I do. That is great to know! And it makes sense. Thanks so much!
