I’m a full-time freelance book editor at LuckyAuthor.com, and these are questions I keep in mind when I’m editing a romance novel (or any book with a subplot!) If you’re a writer, I hope they help you too.
My book release party / signing event was so much fun! So grateful to @berkleyromance, to @lovessweetarrow (an all romance bookstore in the Chicago area), to my family, and to all the wonderful romance readers and friends who came. THANK YOU to everyone who’s already bought, reviewed, and/or posted about the book. I appreciate you all!
I think @berkleyromance did such a lovely job of choosing and designing some book excerpts from my time travel ish romance novel! Here are a couple for you to read 🥰
Yesterday, I celebrated achieving a dream I’ve had since I was a little kid: I published a romance novel with a major publisher! HER KNIGHT AT THE MUSEUM takes place in Chicago, and it’s been optioned for a Hallmark movie!
I love those classic romcoms, and is the best romance novel compliment!
What’s his armor made of? Book boyfriend material 😂 If you like cinnamon roll heroes, this is your lucky week, because my romcom novel HER KNIGHT AT THE MUSEUM is a new release!
I laughed like a 12 year old when I read this. The term ‘well’ for vagina is a new one for me. I have seen, and used in a book that took place in the 1600’s, the euphemism, furrow. I wouldn’t use it in a romantic love scene, though. I think it’s a little too coarse for that.
Furrow!
I’ve seen “well” in two different books. Once was something like, “her hot, wet well.” For me, whether it works or not really depends on the context. I would think I would hate “tit,” but I came across it once in a historical in his POV where I didn’t mind it *shrug*
I chortled at “nether lips” XD
Well… it’s not one I would choose, myself. 🙂 BUT, I will say that a lot of terms I would never use don’t even make me blink when they are in the middle of a really good hot scene 😀
That would be too lengthy
What, nothing for testicles? Seems a bit lacking considering there are multiple lists for female bits!
Hahaha! All I could think of was balls, and ballocks maybe if you’re writing a Regency. Do you have some other suggestions? A few of the slang words strike me as pretty inappropriate for the middle of a sex scene 🙂
Bollocks, if you’re British 😉 I’ve also seen orbs and globes used before – neither of which I’d choose to use myself, but it’s nice to have the option!
Oh, also nuts, maybe knackers if you’re going for the Britishness again. Both fairly colloquial but the same sense as arse and tits 🙂
Family jewels.
For testicles, I’ve also seen: stones, jewels, family jewels, marbles, and indirectly, sack.
I just got this “visual” of a character, cupping his testicles, and referring to them as “my children”. I have NO IDEA where that came from. LOL!
Thank you so much for posting this!
🙂 My pleasure!
Such a great help! Full of info, and other useful facts. I really love this! THANK YOU!! 🙂
So glad it was useful!
This actually helps me avoid using medical terms for characters. Doubt all my story peeps are very scientific about parts. 🙂
Reblogged this on From the Depths of my Mind and commented:
This is an awesome resource for romance/erotic writers alike.
I stumbled upon this website via Pintrest and I love it! This list is very helpful but so are your naming lists! Thank you for creating this!
I laughed like a little kid when I read this. That was priceless. Just reading all of these names in one post was too much but honestly so useful for when I will want to write some interesting stuff.
Great post! Thanks!
Breasts: Fun Bags, Boobs, Juggs, Puppies, Dirty Pillows (Stephen King in Carrie). Knockers, Lung Warts (Navy Guy) Chest Handles, Teats.
Penis: Saucer head, Mushroom Head, Trouser Snake, Blue Headed Throbber, Ruby Throated Thruster, Wobbly Warhead, Trouser Fish, Willy, Small head, Chimpu (Okinawa)
Semen: Jism, cum.
Pussy: Silk Purse, Beaver, kittycat, Snapper (British), smells-like-tuna-but ain’t.
Butt: Bunghole.
You don’t write for women, do you?
I am a bit of a student of language. I “collect” slang etc. I can write as “romantic’ as the next person but am fascinated by all the slang sexual terms we have come up with over the years, especially in English. Here are two non sexual slang expressions. JESUS CRIST ON A CRUTCH! HOLY JUMPED UP DYING DORA!” 😉
I find this both very helpful, very informative and hilarious. Thanks
I still remember “man-root” and using the term mandingo for being macho in the Sixties and Seventies in some books. But then, we still had a lot of censorship.
Haha, I left out some of the more hilarious possibilities (because I can’t imagine anyone really wanting to use them in a love scene)… but it still makes me laugh, too. 🙂
You didn’t list many expressions for breasts, like melons etc. It also brings to mind the sailor’s song; On the good ship Venus, with a mast shaped like a p….. The Austin Powers movie is rife with alternate words.
I love seeing lists like these. As a writer, I sometimes find myself using the same words over and over. These are great, thanks!
What about the “Man in the boat”, Headlights, Look at the bumper on that 57 chevy, one of my favorites.
These are really intended for people writing sex scenes…but if you want to work those into a sex scene, you’re free to do so, of course. 😀
“As the two lesbian lovers compared their “Man in the Boat” with their digits, they soon learned that the rocking the respective water craft was quite pleasurable.” Just a suggested use. 🙂
In my younger years, I had a very sexy mechanic tell me that I had “beautiful fenders like a ’57 Chevy with killer headlights.” I was so tickled, it earned him a first date.
Thank you for your lists, they are amazing!
